Preparing for the Transition to Primary School

The transition to primary school is an exciting milestone, and at St Andrew’s Montessori we take great care to ensure children feel confident and ready for this next step. While every child’s journey is unique, thoughtful preparation helps make the move to Reception a positive and empowering experience.

Montessori education naturally supports school readiness by fostering independence and a love of learning. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their environment, make choices and engage deeply with activities – all skills that translate seamlessly into the structure of primary school.

As children approach the transition, we focus on strengthening practical life skills such as dressing, organising belongings and managing routines.

Social and emotional readiness is equally important; we help children build resilience, collaborate with peers and express their feelings effectively.”

We also introduce experiences that mirror aspects of Reception, such as group activities, early literacy and numeracy exploration, and opportunities to follow multi-step instructions. These gentle preparations help children feel familiar with what lies ahead.

For parents, open communication is key. We provide guidance on supporting independence at home and talking positively about the upcoming change. Visiting the new school, reading stories about starting school and involving children in preparations can all help build excitement and confidence.

With the right support, the transition to primary school becomes a natural progression. Our goal is to ensure each child leaves St Andrew’s Montessori feeling capable, curious, and ready for the adventures of Primary School.
