Libraries are excellent environments for Montessori learning because they naturally align with the core principles of Montessori philosophy, which emphasises independence, self-directed exploration and a love of learning.
Libraries provide children with the freedom to choose their own books and resources, mirroring the Montessori approach where children select activities that interest them, encouraging independence and intrinsic motivation. They offer diverse learning materials, from books to multimedia resources, that cater to various learning styles and levels. This variety allows children to explore topics that captivate them, promoting deeper, personalised learning.
The calm, orderly environment of a library resembles the peaceful, structured atmosphere of a Montessori classroom, making it an ideal place for focused learning and exploration.
Many libraries host workshops, story time and craft sessions that provide hands-on, experiential learning opportunities, which are central to the Montessori method. They are often community hubs where children can interact with peers and adults, learning social skills in a collaborative environment, just as they do in a Montessori classroom.
We are privileged, at St Andrew’s Montessori, to be situated next door to Islington’s West Library, which offers a rich, resourceful setting that complements and enhances the learning we so at school. Other local libraries include Cat and Mouse Library, Finsbury Library, Mildmay Library, North Library, West Library, Archway Library central Library Lewis Carroll Children’s Library, N4 Library and South Library.
