Practical life activities are the heart of our curriculum at St. Andrew’s Montessori, and the good news is that these principles can thrive at home too! Practical life helps children develop independence, confidence coordination and a sense of responsibility.
“Simple daily routines like pouring juice, brushing hair, buttoning a shirt, washing the dishes or setting the table are all rich opportunities for learning.”
Montessori encourages children to “help me do it myself,” and by allowing children to take part in household tasks, we show them that their contributions are valuable.
Try setting up a low shelf with a small jug and cup for water, or involve your child in folding laundry and watering plants. These tasks may seem small, but they build essential life skills – patience, order and pride in one’s work.
Consistency is key. Provide child-sized tools and create a calm, unhurried space where your child can take their time. Let them make mistakes, problem-solve and enjoy the process.
By incorporating practical life activities into your home, you’re extending the Montessori classroom into everyday life, helping your child develop a strong foundation for lifelong learning and independence.
