Bringing outdoor plants into our Montessori classroom

At St. Andrew’s Montessori, we believe in nurturing a deep respect for nature, and that starts right in our classroom. By bringing outdoor plants indoors, we invite children to form a meaningful connection with the natural world, even when inside.

“Plants do more than beautify and brighten a space. They promote calm, encourage mindfulness and teach children the joy and responsibility of caring for living things.”

From watering routines to observing changes in leaf colour, children learn that their actions have real impact – a fundamental Montessori principle.

We select child-friendly plants that are easy to care for and safe to touch. These living companions gently support our children’s emotional well-being while offering countless teachable moments.

Encouraging plant care fosters independence and responsibility. Each child might take turns misting leaves, checking soil moisture or even naming their classroom plant. In these small, daily rituals, we see a blossoming awareness of life and interdependence.

We also encourage families to try indoor gardening at home. A small herb pot on the windowsill or a sunflower seed in a cup can spark curiosity and wonder. It’s a simple way to extend the values of care, observation, confidence and autonomy into everyday life.
