Sensorial: Yellow Knobless Cylinders

Montessori lesson with coloured cyclinders

The aim of Montessori Knobless Cylinders is to refine a child’s visual discrimination, based on diameter and height. It is a sensorial material that consists of four boxes of ten coloured cylinders (red, yellow, blue, and green). Each coloured set is different:

  • Yellow coloured cylinders: decrease in height, as well as in diameter.
  • Red coloured cylinders: are equal in height with decrease in diameter.
  • Green coloured cylinders: decrease in diameter but increase in height.
  • Blue coloured cylinders: are equal in diameter for decrease in height.

Usually, the box lid matches the colour of the cylinders.

Children will use their eyes and hands (sight and touch) to sort the cylinders into the correct order. Watch the below tutorial by Wonderful Word of Montessori to see the lesson in action:

This grading activity using the yellow Knobless Cylinders has many benefits, including eye-hand co-ordination, alignment and judgement, patience and concentration and fine motor co-ordination.

Once children have mastered all four colours, they can be encouraged to use mix and match all cylinder sets to create patterns, towers and other grading experiments as lesson extensions.
