Oh spring! As the world warms up and colours explode, children respond to the sunshine and unfurling of life around them.

In London, we’re blessed with many beautiful parks and open spaces – from the iconic Hyde Park, Regent’s Park and Hampstead Heath to Caledonian Park and Highbury fields closer to home, and of course, the beautiful garden at St Andrew’s Montessori where we spend many happy moments playing and exploring.

Spring is beautiful and such a fun time of year to celebrate in the classroom, too. This season, we’ve learnt all about the life cycle of a chicken, in four stages – the egg, emerging chick, chick and then an adult. We’ve drawn and crafted all things chicken-and-egg and discussed the awe-inspiring transformation that explains how eggs become chickens.

A great way to reinforce this learning at home with your children, could be to bring up some fun facts about chickens, some of which we have already talked about at school:

  • There are 50 billion chickens around the world.
  • A male chicken is a rooster.
  • A female chicken is a hen.
  • Chicken eggs come in many colours including pink, white, brown, blue, and green.
  • Chickens live about 5 to 7 years.
  • There is a pecking order for eating.
  • A chicken’s heart rate beats 275 per minute.
  • Chickens can live without their heads for a long time.
  • Inside an egg is a yellow yolk. This yolk contains everything a growing chicken need before it hatches.
  • A mother hen sits on her eggs for about 21 days carefully turning the eggs over that time.

Have fun with this!
